Centerville Walking Tour

11 Stops

Welcome to the Centerville Public Library's tour of our beautiful village. This outdoor tour will begin and end at the Library and will explore some of Centerville’s historic spots along Main Street. This walk should take about 45 minutes to complete, a bit longer if you choose to stop in to some of the local shops and museums.

In the mid-17th century, this area was purchased by Myles Standish from the native Wampanoag Tribe and called Chequaquet (also known as "Pleasant Harbor" or "Pleasant Cove"). Myles Standish was hired as military advisor to the Plymouth Colony and was on the Mayflower. Chequaquet was renamed Centerville because it is approximately the geographical center of the seven villages that make up the Town of Barnstable. The seven villages include: Hyannis, Osterville, Marstons Mills, West Barnstable, Barnstable, Cotuit, and, of course, Centerville! Now, let's begin our journey with the first stop, and our crown jewel, the “New” Centerville Public Library.
