Salem’s monument to its literary icon is situated, appropriately enough, in the middle of Hawthorne Boulevard, and just beside the Hawthorne Hotel.
One of Salem’s most famous exports, Nathaniel Hawthorne is as big a name in American Literature, as it is in this city. A prolific writer during the Romantic period, Hawthorne is perhaps best remembered for his novels, The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, and his collection of short-stories, Twice-Told Tales.
This next portion of the tour will focus specifically on Nathaniel Hawthorne's work, and his life here in Salem.
To continue to our next stop, please continue to cross to the other side of the street, and proceed before taking a left onto Derby St. Stop in front of the Salem Custom House, which will be on your left.
