The Peabody Institute Library was founded in 1854 by Peabody native and noted financier and philanthropist George Peabody. Considered the oldest public library in the United States to have operated continuously from the same location, it serves its constituents from the Main Library, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and two branch locations. The Library provides employment and entrepreneurship training through its unique relationship with the North Shore Workforce Investment Board, and features many innovative early childhood literacy programs.
