In 1885, the Attleboro Free Public Library Association was created to establish a book collection, but there was no dedicated space for a library. Joseph L. Sweet donated land and funds for a permanent home for the library and a design competition was held. Built by architectural firm MacLean and Wright and local contractor Grant Brothers, the original building on North Main Street was completed in 1907 at a cost of $85,000 and remains today, having expanded in the 1960s and early 1990s to add office, stack, and public spaces to this jewel in a city once known as the "Jewelry Capital of the World."
